Damp/Wet

Commonly known as Kauri, one of the largest and longest living trees in the world. Stout forest tree 30-60m tall when mature. Kauri’s slow growth rate makes it an appropriate and very special landscaping specimen for a native garden. Kauri prefer moist soil which does not dry out over summer, tolerating some wet ground. Requires a sheltered, relatively frost free site.

Also known as jointed rush due to the grey-green leaves having brown markings or joints at various points along the length. OiOi means to ‘shake gently’ which is what the stems of this plant do in the wind. This is a native reed which is a great choice for wet or dry problem areas. Grows in full sun and prefers damp swampy areas, can also grow in water. Grows to height of 1m x width of 1.5m.

Fast growing shrub or small tree, potential to grow to 10m tall. Broad leaves with small rose-coloured flowers 4mm wide in September through to December. Dioecious with male and female individuals, developing edible berries.

Tussock forming grass of up to 4m when in flower. Produces drooping, light golden-yellow flowerheads from September to January. Fast growing. Grows on a wide range of sites but preforms best in wet soils. Approx. height 2m x 3m.

Commonly know as teasel sedge, a densely tufted upright sedge of up to 0.8m tall. Has arching green leaves that drape to the ground providing a nice contrast in the garden. Also referred to as cutty grass this is a robust bright green native grass that is not as well suited to garden plantings but is extremely useful for stabilasation/restoration wetland projects. Leaves can be up to 1.2m long with a wide spreading habit spread by creeping rhizomes. Tolerates coastal wetland, prefers full sun.

Attractive tree with ‘marbled’ leaves with a juvenile form having brown tangled growth with small, rounded serrated leaves whilst the adult foliage is oval, mid-dark green with lighter green marbling. Smothered in tiny white flowers during summer followed by purple fruit. Prefers moist semi-shaded site. Approx 7m x 4m. Grows okay coastal.
